University of Colorado Denver and Anschutz Medical Campus chancellor Jerry Wartgow announced today he will retire in March.

University spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery confirmed the retirement. She said university President Bruce Benson has appointed Don Elliman as the interim chancellor. He’ll begin the work April 1.

In a prepared statement, Benson lauded Wartgow’s accomplishments as chancellor.

“Jerry has done an exceptional job leading the institution, and it is a better place because of his efforts,” Benson said in the release. “He has moved the university forward by implementing successful initiatives, establishing valuable partnerships, improving the infrastructure and raising our profile.”

Wartgow was appointed chancellor by Benson on May 27, 2010. He began his official duties on Aug. 3, 2010.

The prepared announcement from the university did not include any comments from Wartgow or any further explanation about the retirement.

Benson also did not put a timetable on a search for a permanent chancellor.

Elliman, 67, has served as executive director of the Charles C. Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Biology at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus for almost one year.

Prior to that, Elliman was appointed as the state’s chief operating officer under Gov. Bill Ritter.
