AURORA — It wasn’t the most convenient time for high school sports to take a weather hit.
February’s record snowstorm occurred as the stretch run for winter 2011-12 was set to begin its postseason. Swimming and diving league meets were up first.
However, while hundreds of regular-season events in basketball, ice hockey and wrestling were postponed Friday, originally scheduled action is expected to resume today and includes assorted makeups as the snow was forecast to end this morning.
Colorado High School Activities Association assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann said Friday “there are no hard and fast rules for weather postponements” other than safety for teams and fans traveling to and from events, and that it’s up to each school or district to make its own calls. Virtually every in-state school on the east side of the Rocky Mountains was closed Friday and the area’s athletic events postponed.
However, a week before the state swimming meet, two weeks before state wrestling and with only two weeks remaining for regular-season basketball, coaches had feared getting backed up. And swimming and diving entries for state are due by Sunday afternoon.
Of the notable events confirmed for today, Regis Jesuit at Highlands Ranch in girls basketball, postponed from Friday night, will be at 1:30 p.m. The boys matchup, to be played at Regis Jesuit, will tip off at 7 as scheduled.
As of late Friday, East coach Rudy Carey said his Angels’ boys basketball matchup against George Washington in the Denver Prep League at 1 p.m. at the Thunderdome is on. Also on is the girls game of Bishop Machebeuf at Faith Christian in Arvada at 1 p.m.
In swimming and diving, the Centennial League “A” meet will have finals at Arapahoe beginning at 6 p.m., and the Continental “A” meet will be at Heritage at 7:15 p.m.
