GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—One of the Western Slope’s leading natural gas producers is reducing the number of rigs this year because of slumping natural gas prices.

WPX Energy said Monday it plans to operate five drilling rigs in the Piceance Basin this year. That’s down from 11 rigs last year.

According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel ( ), the company is also cutting its drilling plans in the eastern United States.
