The Rapids on Wednesday carved out room for what could be a pricey addition, trading forward Macoumba Kandji to the Houston Dynamo for a conditional MLS draft pick.
Kandji will be remembered mostly for his sacrificial drive in the 2010 MLS Cup final that netted the game-winning goal over FC Dallas. He tore his left anterior cruciate ligament when he ran into defender Ugo Ihemelu, but the ball careened away and into the goal.
“Everyone at the Rapids will always remember Mac’s role in helping the club win the 2010 MLS Cup,” Rapids technical director Paul Bravo said in a release.
Rapids president Tim Hinchey said Tuesday the team is close to making official the signing of an Argentine attacking playmaker. That player’s addition meant someone was on the outs.
Funeral service for Pueblo sportscaster. Services for Lee Douglas, a longtime sportscaster in Pueblo, are scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. in Pueblo at Praise Assembly, 2000 Troy Ave.
Douglas, 57, died Saturday of kidney failure after taking himself to the hospital because he didn’t feel well.
He was a sports figure in Pueblo for more than 30 years while working in both radio and television. Douglas had been on the staff at KOAA-Channel 5/30 for more than 20 years. He also was the analyst on Air Force Academy football games on radio broadcats. His away-from-work name was Douglas Lee Cooley, but he was known on radio and TV as Lee Douglas.
Douglas once told a co-worker: “I never take myself too seriously. I’m not a doctor, lawyer, cop or fireman. I’m lucky. I have a job that pays me for what I’m doing, and it’s something that I love.” Irv Moss, The Denver Post
