DENVER—A 35-year-old refugee from Uzbekistan has pleaded not guilty to providing material support to a terrorist organization.
Jamshid Muhtorov (moo-tor-ov) of Aurora, Colo., is accused of vowing to fight with the Islamic Jihad Union, which the U.S. State Department says is a terrorist organization. Muhtorov isn’t accused of plotting any attacks on U.S. soil.
He was arrested Jan. 21 in Chicago on his way to Istanbul. The Denver Post reports () he pleaded not guilty Tuesday in federal court in Denver.
On Wednesday, his attorneys filed a motion asking that Muhtorov be held with the general population of inmates rather than in a segregated unit where he is locked down 24 hours a day without a Koran in a language he can read.
Muhtorov has a detention hearing scheduled Tuesday.
