LONGMONT — The doctor in charge of testing Longmont High School students expects to find about 50 more cases of latent tuberculosis there, he said Monday during a meeting with parents at the school.

Dr. Randall Reves, director of the Denver Metro Tuberculosis Control Program, said that 54 or 55 students of the first 124 tested showed positive results for latent TB, which is not contagious.

After one student was diagnosed with active TB , which is contagious, public health officials began testing students and staff who shared classes with the ill student. The diagnosis was announced in January, and Reves said the student has not been in school since winter break.

Reves expects the rate of positive tests to fall as more students are tested, since those who had the most exposure to the ill students have already been tested, he said.
