Strong westerly winds are causing significant delays at Denver International Airport this afternoon. The delays are expected to continue until 10 p.m.

Planes were arriving up to two hours and 40 minutes behind schedule, and flights taking off from DIA were delayed by about 30 minutes, said Laura Coale, the airport’s media relations director.

The National Weather Service clocked winds at 53 mph at the airport this afternoon.

Winds are expected to taper off tonight, setting up for a cooler day Sunday with a high of 41 degrees. Today’s high of 65 in Denver did not get close to the record of 74 degrees set in 1986.

The next chance for snow in the Denver area is Monday evening through Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

DIA advised travelers to check with their airline, especially before heading out to pick someone up at the airport.
