COLORADO SPRINGS — A fast-moving storm with heavy bursts of snow paralyzed Colorado Springs’ south side and areas of unincorporated El Paso County and Fountain this evening — freezing over roads, triggering dozens of wrecks and forcing the closure of major streets and highways.

Unsuspecting motorists on South Academy Boulevard, U.S. Highway 85/87 and Bradley Road, among several other corridors, began slipping and sliding about 6 p.m. A furious stream of police radio calls began describing vehicles colliding with each other, spinning into guard rails and skidding off roads.

“We’re on the ice rink known as Academy,” said one sheriff’s deputy as he headed to an crash scene.

A pile-up of 10 or more vehicles was reported about 7 p.m. at Broadmoor Bluffs Drive and Star Ranch Road on the Springs’ southwest side, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

Other crashes were reported near South Academy and B Street, along U.S. Highway 85/87, at Academy and Astrozon boulevards and near Cheyenne Meadows Road and Venetucci Boulevard.
