A man was arrested in Colorado Springs last night for allegedly attempting an armed robbery in which he planned to wear a gas mask to conceal his identity.
The incident unfolded at about 10:50 p.m. when a passerby spotted a “suspicious person” at a Loaf ‘N Jug store, 3705 Drennan Road, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department crime blotter.
The passerby told police that a shadowy man, “wearing all black clothing and what appeared to be a gas mask, carrying a handgun,” was peeking around the corner of the convenience store.
When officers arrived a man behind the store took off running into a nearby drainage ditch. The suspect got away, but police found a “suspicious” car parked in a nearby mobile home park.
Meanwhile, police spotted the man who had run off earlier and a second foot chased ensued. Police chased the suspect into an apartment building on Lakehurst Drive and caught him in a third-floor hallway.
The suspect was arrested and identified as 20-year-old Gregory Schultz. Police said the car in the mobile home park belongs to Schultz and a “large handgun” was found where the lurking man was originally spotted.
The attempted robbery Monday night matches a March 6 robbery in which an armed robber wearing a gas mask held up a Diamond Shamrock store, 2455 Arlington Drive, police said.
Schultz was held on suspicion of attempted robbery and he’s also suspected of last week’s Diamond Shamrock robbery, police said.
