DENVER—A federal commission is working with the Colorado health department to provide a formal public hearing for proposed uranium milling.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission concluded in a letter to an attorney representing clients affected by the proposed Piñon Ridge mill in western Colorado that the health department didn’t give the public notice for comment on the environmental impact of milling uranium there.
Another attorney on the case, Travis Stills, said Tuesday that clients want the department to be more transparent in its handling of the milling license. They also want the public to have a chance to submit comments with their concerns and to conduct a more formal public hearing than ones in the past.
Piñon Ridge would be the first uranium mill built in the U.S. in 30 years.
