SALT LAKE CITY—Federal officials are giving preliminary approval to nearly 1,300 natural gas wells in eastern Utah despite protests from environmental groups.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is endorsing the project in Uintah and Duchesne counties by Denver-based Gasco.

The BLM is recommending an alternative plan to a proposal previously submitted by Gasco that will prohibit wells within a half-mile of the Green River and limit surface drilling in wetlands and riparian areas.

Tim Wagner of the Sierra Club says the drilling will threaten Desolation Canyon, which he says is a major draw for tourists and one of America’s most iconic landscapes.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert says the project will provide an important boost to the state’s economy.

The BLM is accepting comments on the project for 30 days.
