DENVER—A Regional Transportation District board committee has endorsed a recommendation to use both commuter rail and buses to provide rapid transit between Denver and Longmont until there’s money to build a full rail line.

The 13-2 vote Tuesday moves the recommendation to the full RTD board to make a final decision March 27.

RTD had hoped to build a 41-mile rail line from Denver to Longmont by 2020. It reconsidered its timeline due to ballooning costs and lower-than-expected tax revenues to help fund construction.

More than 6 miles of the line, from Denver to south Westminster, is funded and scheduled for completion in 2016. About 30 percent of the line from Denver to Longmont would be done by 2022. It’s unclear when a full line to Longmont could be completed.
