BOULDER — The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing a case in which two University of Colorado students are accused of beating a pigeon to death to determine whether more serious charges are warranted.

“We have been working to develop a protocol with all the police departments that any serious case of animal cruelty gets reviewed for appropriate filing,” District Attorney Stan Garnett said Tuesday. “This case has not been presented for review. Our animal cruelty specialist is in touch with (Boulder police) about whether further review is appropriate.”

Matt Nabhan, 21, and David Hankin, 20, were ticketed Friday by Boulder police on a municipal offense of animal cruelty.

Witnesses called police Friday night to say the men had used a broomstick to beat a pigeon to death on the balcony of their apartment in the north tower of Spanish Towers, 805 29th St. The police report said the witnesses told police the men seemed “joyful” and “excited” about beating the pigeon.
