T-Mobile is closing a call center in Thornton, eliminating 441 jobs and shuttering one of Adams County’s largest employment sites.

The wireless phone service company said the closure is part of a nationwide consolidation in which seven customer-service centers will be closed.

“We regret any job losses, but certainly with 400-plus jobs, the magnitude of this is huge,” said Barry Gore, president and chief executive of Adams County Economic Development.

The call center, at Interstate 25 and East 84th Avenue, is scheduled to close by the end of June. It has been in operation since 2001. T-Mobile is the eighth-largest employer in Thornton.

T-Mobile said affected employees will have the opportunity to transfer to 17 remaining call centers. In Colorado, the company has another center in Colorado Springs.

“It’s certainly disappointing that hundreds of people are going to lose their jobs,” said Mike Masciola, Thornton’s director of economic development. “We understand the tough nature of the decision T-Mobile had to make due to their economic situation.”

Other call centers to be closed are in Allentown, Pa.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Frisco and Brownsville in Texas; Lenexa, Kan.; and Redmond, Ore.

Those facilities employ a total of 3,300 workers. The remaining call centers will add about 1,400 jobs as part of the consolidation.

Employees not transferring to other facilities will be offered severance pay, job coaching and two months of paid health insurance.
