GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The owner of 61 cows seized by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office says he couldn’t afford animal feed or veterinarian care for his cattle. Three of the animals had to be euthanized.

Authorities say they found cattle carcasses littering the property after receiving a complaint of animal abuse. They said one carcass was being used to feed a cat.

According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel ( ), John Lawton is cooperating with authorities, who turned the cattle over to a feed lot for rehabilitation and veterinary care.
