GIRLS SOCCER
Will anybody score on the Golden Eagles? Through its first seven games, top-ranked Mountain Vista has yet to surrender a goal. Even more staggering is that coach Theresa Echtermeyer’s defense has allowed only 24 shots on goal in those seven games.
Goalies Danielle Cushing and Torrell Stewart haven’t had much to do, but they will be in action again today against Douglas County at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch at 4:30 p.m. The visiting Huskies’ record could be a bit misleading at 3-5-1, but a quality win last Saturday against ThunderRidge opened a few eyes.
Other games of note Saturday feature a couple of interesting 5A-4A matchups. Broomfield travels to Fort Collins to take on Fossil Ridge at noon, and Arapahoe will visit Niwot at 2 p.m.
TRACK AND FIELD
Mullen Invite. The premier event on the docket this weekend is at Brother Bernard Kinneavy de La Salle Stadium and the Mullen Runners’ Roost Invitational.
The annual gathering that doesn’t keep any sort of team scores will have elite athletes from every corner of the state, and classification is not an issue. The festivities begin at 8 a.m. and will likely go until the sun sets.
If you are looking for a little bit smaller gathering, there also are meets at Air Academy, Glenwood Springs, Springfield, Berthoud, Harrison, Bayfield, Primero, Regis, Byers and Englewood.
BASEBALL
Notch in the belt. Let’s face it. A win over Rocky Mountain in baseball is always something to feel good about. The Lobos have featured a quality program for years and have always been up to the test of getting everyone’s best.
On Tuesday, Mountain Range got the better of Rocky 3-1 at Pando Field in Fort Collins.
The Mustangs’ key has been their pitching. Tyler Fox struck out 11 Lobos and in his 21 innings this season has 32 strikeouts against just four walks. Coach Jeremy Lustik’s staff, which also includes Shane Meltz and Zach Adams, has a team ERA of just 1.42
Mountain Range, 1-0 in the Front Range League, travels to Boulder today to take on Fairview and hosts Fossil Ridge on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Westminster.
GIRLS LACROSSE
A must-see. If you missed Carondelet High School of Concord, Calif., on Tuesday or Wednesday, you’ll get one more chance Friday, when the Cougars are at the Stutler Bowl to play Cherry Creek.
