FORT CARSON — The Arvada parents of a soldier killed in Iraq have begun a walk of more than 1,000 miles to honor their son and see his name on a memorial in Illinois.
Michelle and Dan Benavidez set out Friday from Fort Carson near Colorado Springs with a send-off from more than 1,000 soldiers. The Colorado Springs Gazette reported they expect to arrive at the Middle East Conflicts Wall Memorial in Marseilles, Ill., on June 16.
Their son, 29-year-old Staff Sgt. Kenneth Mayne, was killed by an insurgent’s bomb in Baghdad in 2008. The Associated Press
