BOULDER, Colo.—A 44-year-old Denver man who pleaded guilty to kidnapping two hikers near Nederland in 2010 has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

The Daily Camera ( ) reports Joseph Scott Carter was sentenced Friday. He struck a deal with prosecutors in February and pleaded guilty to second-degree kidnapping.

Authorities say Carter had confronted a man and woman near a campground, separated them at gunpoint and handcuffed the man to a tree. He eventually let the woman go, and the man told police he dislocated his thumb to free himself from the cuffs.

Carter was later found camping in the area.

Court records say he told the couple they were not allowed in the area because it was controlled by a militia.
