FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Oil and natural gas companies are turning to cities but also utilities to find water for hydraulic fracturing.

The Coloradoan reports () Platte River Power Authority officials are trying to decide whether to lease excess water from its coal-fired Rawhide Energy Station to those companies. A spokeswoman says the utility’s board will be updated on the issue Thursday, but a decision is not expected soon.

Platte River Power Authority is owned by the cities of Fort Collins, Estes Park, Longmont and Loveland, whose City Council voted Tuesday to continue selling water to energy companies.

The mayor of Fort Collins says the utility often sells its water for agricultural uses, but because the region’s reservoirs are full, irrigators haven’t had to buy water from it this year.
