Colorado saw a nearly 19 percent surge in new car and light-truck registrations in the first quarter of 2012 when compared to the same period in 2011, according to a report by the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association.

The increase was even more dramatic for March, during which sales rose 26 percent over March 2011.

“The sector was among the hardest hit, but is now leading the economy out of recession,” said Tim Jackson, president of the association.

European brands were up 29 percent in the first quarter, and the three American automakers posted a 27 percent increase in sales in Colorado, according to the report.
