FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Colorado regulators have ordered an energy company to stop drilling an oil well in a closed landfill in Windsor.
The Coloradoan ( ) reported Tuesday that a Ranchers Exploration drilling rig became unstable while drilling the well last week. According to a cease-and-desist order issued by the state, landfill debris was expelled from the well bore.
The acting director of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, Thomas Kerr, told the newspaper that drilling through refuse isn’t acceptable.
The Greeley-based company didn’t return calls seeking comment.
Residents have been concerned about the drilling since it was first announced last year. The company had moved the well to a location that both the state and Larimer County thought would be safe to drill.
