Enhanced security
Most people know they run a risk of accidentally or unwittingly downloading malware such as viruses whenever they search the Internet with personal computers not equipped with antivirus protection. But they may not know that their smartphones, primarily those that run on Google’s Android operating system, could fall under attack by hackers, viruses, spyware and other threats lurking behind apps and mobile web sites. Although Google in February officially unleashed its Bouncer technology, which automatically scans nearly half a million new and existing Android apps, as well as developer accounts without interrupting the user’s experience, it can’t always prevent malware from entering smartphones. A March report by independent testing organization showed that some apps in Google Play, formerly known as the Android Market, downloaded their malicious code after installation. The reason iPhones and iPads are not affected by malicious apps is because Apple has a strict approval process and the mobile devices work on a closed operating system. Unlike Apple, Google doesn’t have the same restrictions and it’s an open environment — that makes Android more vulnerable to attacks. The 10 apps that showed the best malware detection: avast! Mobile Security, Dr.Web Anti-virus, F-Secure, _IKARUS mobile.security LITE, Kaspersky Mobile Security, Lookout Security & Antivirus, MYAndroid Protection Antivirus, NQ Mobile Security & Antivirus, Zoner AntiVirus Free, and McAfee Mobile Security.
