GOLDEN, Colo.—A Lakewood man convicted of killing his girlfriend’s three-year-old son has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Twenty-two-year-old Lysander Benjamin Harvey was sentenced after jurors convicted him Tuesday of a first-degree murder charge in the death of Elijah Carpenter. Doctors say the boy had bleeding in his brain, bruises, rib fractures and burn marks when he was taken to a hospital last year.
Harvey allegedly told police he sometimes boxed with the boy to toughen him up and whipped him with a belt for potty training accidents.
Prosecutors say that during one whipping, Elijah’s mother, Kristina Carpenter, left the room and didn’t intervene. Kristina Carpenter was convicted in February of child abuse resulting in death and was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
