LAS VEGAS—A Nevada state judge is due to hear arguments about the fate of a dog that fatally mauled a 1-year-old child two weeks ago.

Clark County District Court Judge Joanna Kishner is due to hear a request from the New York-based Lexus Project to take ownership of the 6-year-old mastiff-Rhodesian ridgeback mix named Onion.

The case has drawn intense interest and protests after the April 27 death of Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan.

The boy’s family in Henderson voluntarily gave the animal up for euthanasia.

But a court injunction on Monday delayed the death at least until the court hearing.

Lexus Project lawyer Rich Rosenthal says the dog should be sent to live at a sanctuary outside Denver. He argues the 120-pound family pet was only following its nature.
