DENVER—Meteorologists are asking for the public’s help in tracking large hailstones that fall across Colorado.

The Denver Post ( ) reports the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University has joined with the National Weather Service and other meteorologists to collect information and track statistics, as well as instruct the public on how to help.

State climatologist Nolan Doesken says hailstone collectors—as soon it’s safe to go outside after a storm—should retrieve the largest stone. With witnesses, they should record its diameter, circumference and weight. The stone then should be tightly wrapped with plastic and stored in a freezer in an airtight plastic bag.

Doesken is asking collectors to call him at 970-491-8545 or email him at nolan(at)atmos.colostate.edu with the results. Meteorologists want to build a website to collect and track the data.
