Private equity firms invested more than $5 billion in Colorado companies last year, according to a report today from the Private Equity Growth Capital Council.

Of the $274 billion that private equity firms invested globally last year, just shy of $144 billion went to fund 1,702 transactions in the United States, the report said. That represented 52.6 percent of the total.

Colorado received $5.13 billion in 38 deals, which was 3.6 percent of the U.S. total. Colorado ranked ninth among states for the amount or private equity received.

Almost all of that money, $5.03 billion, went to deals within two of the state’s Congressional districts – the 6th and 1st.

Texas received the most private equity funding last year at $20.5 billion. New York was second with $18.6 billion, California third with $15.7 billion and North Carolina fourth with $10.5 billion.
