COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Civil rights groups say a costume of Dr. Martin Luther King worn by a white second-grader in Colorado Springs was inappropriate because it reinforced stereotypes of African-Americans.

Sean King was pulled out of class on Wednesday for painting his face black as part of a school project that required students to dress up as a historical figure. Sean King says he was trying to honor the slain civil rights leader.

Steve Klein of The King Center in Atlanta tells KRDO-TV ( ) the youth apparently had good intentions, but people need to understand why there are still people who are offended by black faces worn by white people.
