FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Colorado State coach Jim McElwain has granted senior defensive end C.J. James a release.

McElwain tells the Loveland Reporter-Herald ( ) that James, of Florida, approached him about wanting to be closer to his home and his daughter. James had a career-best five sacks last season.

Earlier this spring, safety Drew Reilly also voluntarily left the team. He has signed with BYU.

James had been roommates with linebacker Mike Orakpo and defensive lineman Nordly Capi. Orakpo, Capi and defensive lineman Colton Paulhus were expelled after an off-campus fight in April.

Meanwhile, McElwain said Wednesday the Rams will be adding defensive back Jasen Oden. He played at East High School in Buffalo, N.Y., then went to NC Tech for prep school to raise his ACT scores.
