Chambertin Condominiums north of Interstate 70 in Avon was completely destroyed by a fire that spread to three acres of hillside behind it this afternoon.

Two people went to the hospital — a resident for smoke inhalation and a firefighter for an unspecified injury. Both were treated and released, the city of Avon reported tonight.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The blaze destroyed the three-story, . Three of the units were occupied when the fire broke out at about 4 p.m., the city said.

The three-alarm was under control at about 6:30 p.m, but fighting the blaze required fire engines from throughout Eagle County and from surrounding counties.

According to property assessments for the complex, the four units were valued for taxes at $460,000, $363,800, $342,000 and $145,000 in 2010.

Traffic on I-70 was not impeded, but Nottingham Road will remain closed throughout the night for ongoing fire operations, the city said.
