Anadarko Petroleum Corp. has struck oil on the old Lowry bombing range in Arapahoe County.

The well drilled in the Niobrara shale yielded the equivalent of 200 barrels of oil a day in the first month of production, according to data filed with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Production dropped to the equivalent of 127 barrels of oil a day after 90 days.

“It is a solid well, but we have to see where it stacks up,” said John Christiansen, a spokesman for .

Additional test wells have to be drilled and data analyzed to determine how much oil and gas is in the area, Christiansen said.

The production number is a combination of the oil and gas from the well — oil made up less than half the production.

Anadarko has six drilling permits in Arapahoe County and 11 more permits pending, according to state data.

A total of 38 drilling permits have been approved in the county by the oil and gas commission.

The well was drilled horizontally through which starts about 6,000 feet below the surface.

In Weld County, some Niobrara horizontal wells in have had production at 800 barrels a day.

“Results outside the core area have been spotty,” said Pete Stark, a vice president at consulting firm IHS Inc.
