The month of June is the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, with the summer solstice occurring June 20. The start of summer will spell warmer temperatures for the Front Range. This also will mean afternoon thunderstorms will become more frequent and possibly more severe.
Severe thunderstorms are among the most numerous this month, with 40 percent of all Colorado tornadoes typically occurring this month. Some of Denver’s most notable thunderstorms have occurred in June, including a hailstorm that struck Denver International Airport on June 20, 2001. Hail as large as 2 inches in diameter was reported in and around the airport that day.
Hot temperatures also are more common this month, especially toward the latter half of June. Back in 2006, a high of 90 degrees or more was observed for a record 19 consecutive days.
The latest forecast from the Climate Prediction Center indicates above-normal temperatures, along with an equal chance of above-normal, near-normal or below-normal precipitation for Denver and northeastern Colorado this month.
