Union Pacific Railroad is investing more than $10 million in the rail line that runs between Winter Park to just west of Kremmling.

The 56-mile project includes replacing about two miles of rail in various curves, as well as renewing the surfaces at 39 road crossings.

Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said that at the crossings, concrete pads will be placed between the rails.

Crews will replace 44,400 ties, spreading 24,900 tons of rock ballast to provide a more stable roadbed, and will make more than a half mile of improvements in tunnels.

Davis said that the project, involving about 100 Union Pacific employees, began on May 7, and will be completed by the end of June.

Davis said the rail line was built between 1905 and 1907 by the Denver Northwestern & Pacific Railroad.

Union Pacific said it plans to invest $3.6 billion in its 32,000-mile rail network during 2012 to enhance safety and efficiency.
