Seventeen airports in Colorado are receiving $15.6 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation for infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a new terminal in Grand Junction.
The largest award – $4.05 million – went to the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Jefferson County. The money is being used to improve the runway safety area and is the second phase of a multi-phase project.
The Grand Junction Regional Airport received $2.1 million for construction of the new terminal.
Aspen-Pitkin County/Sardy Field received $1.9 million. The money is being used to construct a taxiway and improve airport drainage. The construction of the taxiway will allow aircraft control tower to clear the aircraft more expeditiously and enhance safety.
Eagle County Regional Airport received $1.8 million to rehabilitate the apron.
The Durango-La Plata County Airport also received $1.6 million .
In a statement touting the awards, U.S. Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo), said Colorado’s regional airports form important links for businesses and travelers throughout the state.
“Improving Colorado’s transportation network is one of the most important things we can do to support our local communities and local businesses,” said Udall. “These grants are important down payments on maintaining the connections that our global economy requires.”
