Getting your player ready...

Brock Berglund, a former Valor Christian quarterback who left the University of Kansas in January, will continue his football career at the junior college level. Berglund plans to enroll at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College, he said Wednesday.

“It’s one of those things you look at optimistically, but it’s frustrating,” Berglund said. “It’s hard, but it’s exciting that I get to play football.”

Berglund had been looking for a landing spot since Jan. 16. He was considering a transfer to a Pac-12 school. But an error in his class schedule at KU, discovered two weeks ago, left him two credits short of an NCAA requirement to transfer. That made Berglund academically ineligible this fall.

“(Kansas) didn’t look at one of the rules, and I had no control over my schedule the entire time,” said Berglund, who had a 3.49 grade-point average at KU. “They brought this to our attention after we’d already gotten the release. It’s frustrating.”

Kansas spokesman Jim Marchiony disputed Berglund’s claim, saying the school’s academic support staff “multiple times reviewed with Brock and his family the requirements necessary for Brock to be eligible to play football in the fall of 2012” — including a meeting in the fall of 2011.

Asked if he ever talked about eligibility with KU officials, Berglund said “no. This was never even a remote concern until two weeks ago.”

Were Berglund to transfer to a Division I school, he wouldn’t be eligible to receive a scholarship for a full calendar year or play this fall. The year Berglund spent at Kansas acted, in essence, as a redshirt season, so he has four years left to play four seasons of college football.

Berglund can play immediately at Scottsdale Community College and likely will be a starter. Ryan Casey, The Denver Post
