BROOMFIELD, Colo.—The mother of a man who was shot and killed by Broomfield police says family members tried to tell officers the weapon her son was holding was a plastic pellet gun.

Twenty-one-year-old Kyle Miller was killed Thursday morning in the northwest Denver suburb. Police say he was pointing a gun at officers.

Cheryl Miller tells the Boulder Daily Camera in Saturday’s editions ( ) that she bears no ill will toward the officers.

Miller says her son struggled with schizoaffective bipolar disorder and had recently lost a job as an emergency medical technician.

Police say they can’t comment on the incident. The officers involved were placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
