Fema: flood insurance needed in wake of fires

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to purchase flood insurance in light of recent wildfires that have altered landscapes.

Standard homeowners insurance does not protect against flood-related loss.

Under the national flood insurance policy, homes can be insured for up to $250,000 for the building and up to $100,000 for the contents. The average insurance policy costs about $300 a year for $100,000 in coverage. There is a 30-day waiting period before the insurance takes affect. The Denver Post
