FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Fort Collins man faces charges of assaulting an officer and possession of cocaine after a pursuit by deputies that ended when he climbed almost to the top of a 100-foot-tall tower.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reported Wednesday ( ) that 33-year-old John Michael Evans is accused of striking a Larimer County sheriff’s deputy with a van. The deputy suffered minor injuries.

Authorities say that after deputies forced Evans’ van to stop, he climbed a tower supporting a power line and stayed there for 2 1/2 hours before negotiators persuaded him to come down.

Deputies say they wanted to talk to Evans because his girlfriend reported a domestic dispute.

Evans was being held in lieu of $50,000 bond. It wasn’t clear whether he had a lawyer.
