After seeing some rain and cooler conditions, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland are lifting some fire restrictions, while keeping others in place.

Restrictions are shifting from Stage 2 to Stage 1 Thursday, allowing for more activity in developed areas. Restrictions on recreational shooting, which is considered “dispersed recreation,” remain in place, however.

These shooting restrictions were put into effect April 12 after 15 fires in the forest and grassland were linked to recreational shooting. The recent weather conditions also played a part in the decision, Forest Service Public Affairs Specialist Tammy Williams said.

“Given what has happened this year, we’re trying to take extra precautions,” Williams said, adding that the shooting restrictions don’t include hunting.

In accordance with the Stage 1 fire restrictions, forest visitors can’t build or maintain a fire outside of a recreation site; use a stove, grill or lantern unless it’s petroleum fueled; use explosives; smoke, unless it’s in a developed recreation site; weld; or use any kind of combustion engine.

These restrictions will stay in effect until further notice.

“More hot, dry weather is expected,” said Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland Forest Supervisor Glenn Casamassa in the release. “We appreciate everyone continuing to follow the restrictions.”
