Electricity was out in a widespread area of downtown Denver and some nearby neighborhoods around the lunch hour, with power down to about 1,900 customers, according to Xcel Energy.

Power went down at about 11:44 a.m. Tuesday, said Michelle Aguayo, an Xcel spokeswoman, and utility crews had about 95 percent of the area restored by about 1 p.m.

The area with interrupted power was roughly from Market to California streets northeast of the 16th Street Mall to 26th Street, Aguayo said.

Some traffic lights in the area went out because of the power interruption. The outage was caused by a construction contractor who hit and took out an underground energy line.
