frontman Ben Gibbard released a new song Monday after hearing former Seattle Mariner Ichiro Suzuki had been traded to the New York Yankees.

Putting “Ichiro’s Theme” up on his , Gibbard wrote, “I wrote this a few years ago. Today seems like the best day to let you all hear it. Thank you, Ichiro.”

Gibbard is a Pacific Northwest native, born in Washington, near Seattle.

Suzuki played for 12 years as a Mariner after coming to the US from Japan. Known simply as “Ichiro,” he played his first game as a Yankee on Monday, against his former team.

Gibbard’s tribute praises Ichiro’s skills, including base stealing. “Go go go go Ichiro!” might not be as catchy as “Root, root, root for the home team,” but the track pays homage to the player in a fun way. The song has reached more than 18,000 plays in the first day since its release.

Gibbard is set to release his first solo album, “Former Lives,” on Oct. 16. Here’s hoping for a football anthem, or maybe a tennis tribute. -Kelsey Fowler
