An Adams County woman has died from hantivirus, which is caused by contact with rodent feces and urine.
Her name was not released.
A Tri-County Health Department investigation determined “the patient was most likely exposed to hantavirus while cleaning a rodent-infested area of her home,” the agency said in a statement Wednesday.
The woman died of hantavirus on July 10.
The case is the first hantavirus fatality in Colorado this year and the third case of hantivirus ever in Adams County, according to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment.
Between 1985 and 2009 the state had , according to the latest information available from the state health department.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows that through July 3, Colorado has had 78 hantivirus cases, which is second only to New Mexico with 90.
