ASPEN, Colo.—Colorado resort communities are among those taking an unprecedented survey of the homeless and residents at risk of losing housing.

The volunteer project in Pitkin, Garfield and Eagle counties is part of a statewide effort to gather information about the homeless to help those in need.

According to the Aspen Daily News ( ), state officials want to know how people got into financial trouble and other personal data.

Aspen officials previously counted the number of people at the Aspen Homeless Shelter, which operates only in the winter.
