BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A 12-year-old New Jersey girl steered a car to safety after her grandfather died at the wheel with his foot on the accelerator.

Miranda Bowman was returning to her Burlington Township home after spending the day racing go-karts at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville with 63-year-old Paul Parker on Tuesday.

Bowman told The Burlington County Times that her grandfather said he didn’t feel good and felt scared before he closed his eyes.

The 12-year-old slid over as the car approached 80 mph, and she pressed the brake and steered the vehicle toward some bushes.

She was not injured in the crash. Relatives said her grandfather had a chronic heart condition and died of heart failure.
