DENVER—A horse in Las Animas County has tested positive for a virus that can cause painful sores in infected animals.
The Colorado Department of Agriculture said Thursday that the horse that tested positive for vesicular stomatitis is the state’s first diagnosed case this year. Several cases have been identified in New Mexico.
The disease is thought to be spread by insects that migrate along river valleys.
The infected Colorado horse’s home is under quarantine. Agriculture officials say the horse hadn’t traveled recently.
The last confirmed case of vesicular stomatitis in Colorado was diagnosed in 2006.
