COLORADO SPRINGS — A 5-year-old girl was released from Memorial Hospital on Friday afternoon after being treated for injuries she suffered when she was hit by a race car at the summit of Pikes Peak during practice for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The girl is not from Colorado Springs, said Colorado Springs police spokeswoman Barbara Miller. The girl’s father told police that the family was in the area on vacation.

A Memorial Star helicopter landed near Glen Cove just after 10:30 a.m. Friday, and the child was moved by stretcher from an ambulance to the chopper, which took off en route to the hospital at about 10:45 a.m.

Miller said a male patient was transported to Penrose Hospital, also with non-life-threatening injuries. Martinez said the man taken to Penrose was not the driver but a passenger in the race car.

A race official confirmed that a 1967 Mustang surrounded by caution tape at the summit was the vehicle involved in the crash.
