FOUNTAIN, Colo.—Authorities say a Fort Carson soldier who was shot by civilian police during a confrontation faces arrest when he is released from a hospital.

Thirty-four-year-old Stephen Payne was shot early Sunday outside a house in Fountain, just east of Fort Carson.

Police Cpl. Dorell Green said Wednesday that Payne was expected to be released from a hospital soon and would be arrested on suspicion of menacing and unlawful discharge of a weapon.

Fort Carson officials confirmed Payne is stationed at the post but refused to release details, citing privacy laws.

Police say officers were responding to a report of a shot fired when Payne followed family members into the front yard and reached for a handgun. Authorities say one officer shot Payne several times.

No one else was hurt.
