The has more than 13,000 examples of textiles and garments from all over the world. A sampling will be in the exhibit “ABCs of the Avenir Museum” opening Friday. The show, which runs through Feb. 1, will feature two items that represent each letter of the alphabet — one upper case and one lower case — and will focus on clothing and accessories. The Avenir has an impressive collection of international items, including 500 kimonos and more than 300 textiles from Central and South Asia. Among the Western artifacts are 19th and 20th century men’s and women’s apparel, elaborate fans and hats, beaded flapper dresses, shoes, handmade lace and designer apparel from Mr. Blackwell, Calvin Klein and Arnold Scaasi. The museum is at 115 University Center for the Arts and admission is free. A series of lectures will be held in conjunction with the exhibit, including a session to meet curator Susan Torntore at 7 p.m. Aug. 30. Lectures are at the University Center for the Arts Annex, 216 E. Lake St. The museum in in CSU’ s Department of Design and Merchandising and is part of the College of Applied Human Sciences.
