FAIRPLAY, Colo.—A battle is brewing between an Aurora utility and federal officials over a decision by the federal Bureau of Land Management to open South Park to oil and gas drilling near a major water source.
Aurora Water wants a one-mile buffer around Spinney Reservoir over concern drilling could contaminate the water surface.
According to the Denver Post ( , the oil and gas leases being considered for early next year would allow drilling on nearly 3,000 acres, including land within a half mile of the large reservoir that holds water for Aurora.
BLM officials said Thursday they will not develop a special plan for leasing. The agency also has not responded to concerns raised by the utility.
