A coalition opposing a proposed abortion ban that could appear on November’s ballot kicked off its NO Personhood Campaign Thursday with a midday rally on the west steps of the Capitol.

About 100 people representing the coalition, which includes Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado and The Interfaith Alliance of Colorado, announced they, for a third time, will stop the proposed amendment to the state Constitution and do what they can to forestall any fourth attempt next election.

Proponents of the ballot measure, including Personhood Colorado, say the amendment would stop abortions but would not ban most forms of contraception, in-vitro fertilization or lifesaving procedures.

Opponents say the amendment would allow politicians to intrude into women’s personal health care decisions, ban abortions for victims of rape or incest and interfere with fertility treatments.

Supporters of the measure will know in early September whether their petition drive garnered enough valid voter signatures to put the anti-abortion measure on the ballot.
