A good move by front office? it happened
NEW YORK — To grade trades prematurely is dangerous. But with six weeks remaining in the regular season, the Rockies’ deal with the Chicago Cubs last winter ranks as their best offseason move.
Colorado shipped third baseman Ian Stewart and minor-league pitcher Casey Weathers to the Cubs for outfielder Tyler Colvin and infielder DJ LeMahieu. Stewart has missed much of the season with a wrist injury, and Weathers remains in Double-A.
Colvin, who tripled and scored the Rockies’ lone run in Thursday’s win over the New York Mets, is batting .294 with 40 extra-base hits.
“I haven’t really thought about (comparing the trade). I made some good friends in Chicago,” Colvin said.
LeMahieu has been terrific defensively at second base in spot duty while hitting .281.
“It ‘s been great having Ty here. It would be nice to go back there and keep rolling,” LeMahieu said of the Rockies’ three-game series that begins Friday at Chicago.
Fowler out. Dexter Fowler is no longer wearing an air cast or using crutches, but his return to the lineup remains uncertain after he turned his right ankle Wednesday.
Footnotes. Tom Runnells will coach third base Friday and Saturday as Rich Dauer is inducted into the Orioles’ Hall of Fame. … Jorge De La Rosa threw 55 pitches Wednesday and has not been ruled out from pitching in the bigs this season. … Troy Tulowitzki and Jason Giambi will begin rehab assignments Friday in Tulsa.
